Modern Fossils is honored to have 3 of our pieces chosen to hang in Jersey City's Office of Cultural Affairs' upcoming "Women’s History Month Group Exhibition"!
This Exhibit will be displayed in their Rotunda Gallery located at 280 Grove Street, 2nd Floor, in Jersey City NJ. It will hang for the entire month of March.
The chosen Modern Fossils are "Body Image 1", "Body Image 2" and "Body Image 3".
These original, handmade plaster artworks are designed using both natural aggregate and man-made detritus found while cleaning up local waterway environments.
The pieces of broken mirror creating the women's bodies evoke the concepts of both body image and self-reflection. Body image is something that women struggle with universally, often wrestling with the conflict between the images we see in the mirror and our ideals of what we think our bodies "should" look like. Coming to peace with our bodies often requires deep self-reflection.
These concepts are further magnified when the viewers see their own bodies / selves reflectd in the figures of the women. This can serve as an impetus for the viewers to reflect upon their own sense of body image. This in turn creates a deeper communion between the viewers and the artworks.
